| A Congregational minister and author, was born near Capel Isaac, Carmarthenshire, his parents being in very humble circumstances. His school-days were limited to one quarter, but he worked hard and successfully in the pursuit of knowledge. He was ordained in 1840, and served in the pastorate at Aberdare, Llanelli, Beaufort (Monmouthshire), and Swansea. The degree of D.D. was conferred upon him by Marietta College, America. He became one of the most prominent ministers in the connexion, and travelled much throughout the Principality.
He translated into Welsh part of Barnes’ “Commentary on the New Testament” and published an edition of the Bible, with devotional annotations; but his principal work is the “History of Protestant Nonconformity in Wales (London: J. & W. Rider, 1861). He also published a volume of “Miscellaneous Papers on subjects relating to Wales”(Swansea: E. Griffiths, 1867), and other works; and with the Rev. John Thomas, D.D., wrote a Welsh “History of the Congregational Churches of Wales” (Dolgelly: W. Hughes). He was the first Welsh minister to be elected chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, but died before the time for delivering his address arrived.
